Which Careers Actually Need Which A Level Subjects
A candidate with excellent results in the wrong three subjects is not a weak applicant for a course requiring the fourth. They are ineligible. The patterns that hold nearly everywhere, and why mathematics decides most of it.
There is a decision students make at around sixteen, usually in an afternoon, usually on very little information, that closes more doors than anything else they will do at school.
It is choosing advanced level subjects. And the reason it matters so much is simple. Many university courses require specific subjects, and no amount of strong grades in other subjects substitutes for a missing one. A candidate with excellent results in the wrong three subjects is not a strong applicant for a course requiring the fourth. They are ineligible.

The patterns that hold nearly everywhere
Requirements are set by institutions and they vary, so treat what follows as where to start looking rather than as the answer. Confirm every one against the specific programme at the specific institution, for the year you will apply.
With that said, some patterns are close to universal because the course content demands them.

Notice the bottom rows. Some strong careers have no subject gate at all, which means the decision there is about what you can do well rather than what you must take.
Mathematics is the one that quietly decides things
If you take one thing from this page, take this. Dropping mathematics closes more future options than dropping any other single subject, and it closes them silently.
The reason is that mathematics is a requirement across engineering, computing, economics, finance, architecture, most sciences and a growing share of business and social science programmes. No other subject appears on that many lists.
Students drop it because they find it hard, which is understandable and is usually a symptom of an unrepaired gap rather than an inability. If you are wavering on mathematics, work out first whether the real problem is a foundation you never solidified, because that is fixable and the consequence of dropping it is not.
Keep it if you can reasonably carry it. You can decline to use it. You cannot retroactively have taken it.
How to check properly, in four steps
- List three or four courses you might apply to, including one you are unsure about.
- Find each one’s entry requirements on the institution’s own site. Not a forum, not a relative’s memory, not a screenshot in a group. Requirements change and second hand versions are frequently years out of date.
- Write down every named subject. Anything appearing on more than one list is effectively compulsory for you.
- Fill the remaining places with subjects you can sustain, where you have groundwork and some genuine interest.
This takes about an hour and it is the highest return hour available to you at this stage. Most students spend considerably longer choosing than that, and none of it on the actual requirements.
Also check what your school actually offers. A theoretically ideal combination it cannot teach is not an option, and finding that out late is avoidable.
Choose for the field, not the job title
At sixteen you are being asked to name a career, and most people who name one at sixteen are doing something adjacent by thirty. That is normal and it is not failure.
So choose for the broad area rather than the specific title. Sciences keep the whole health and engineering region open. Mathematics with sciences keeps engineering, computing and finance open. Humanities with a strong writing record keeps law, policy, media and teaching open.
This is different from taking a scattered combination to keep everything nominally alive, which usually serves nothing well. Pick a region and be strong in it.

The trades, which nobody mentions at school
School careers advice is overwhelmingly about degrees, and it should not be.
Electrical installation, plumbing, welding, solar installation and maintenance, refrigeration, vehicle mechanics, tailoring at a professional standard, and building trades all lead to work that is in demand, that cannot be done remotely from another continent, and that can be started earlier and at lower cost than a degree.
Solar installation in particular is worth naming, because demand across the region is growing and the skills are teachable in months rather than years.
None of this is a lesser path, and it is not incompatible with study later. A trade that supports you while you study is a considerably better position than a degree you cannot fund.
Requirements are not only about subjects
A stated requirement usually contains several separate conditions, and satisfying most of them is not satisfying it. Read each one on its own.
- Named subjects, which are absolute. Strong grades elsewhere do not substitute.
- A minimum grade in those subjects, which may be higher than the general minimum.
- A number of passes or credits overall, sometimes at a lower level as well as the advanced one.
- Whether results may be combined across sittings, which decides whether resitting one subject helps you.
- Additional requirements such as an entrance test, an interview or a portfolio.
The fourth is the one that catches people. If an institution requires everything in a single sitting, a plan built around resitting one weak subject does not work, and that is worth knowing before you build the plan.
Where the work actually is
Subject choice decides which courses you can enter. It does not decide whether anyone is hiring afterwards, and those are separate questions worth asking together.
Two checks are worth doing while you still have the choice. Look at current job advertisements in the field and read what employers actually ask for, which is often different from what a course emphasises. And find out whether the profession requires registration with a professional body to practise, because a degree in a regulated field that does not satisfy the registration route is a serious and avoidable problem.
Also ask whether the work exists where you intend to live. A qualification with few local employers means moving, and that is a real cost to decide on deliberately rather than discover later.
Questions students ask
What if I take the wrong subjects?
Options exist and they cost time. Some institutions run foundation or bridging programmes that admit students without the standard combination. Some related courses have different requirements and lead to similar work. Occasionally a subject can be sat separately later. Ask the department directly rather than assuming the door is shut, and see what to do if you miss the cut off for the wider set of routes.
Do universities prefer certain subjects generally?
Beyond stated requirements, what matters is doing well in demanding subjects you can actually sustain. A strong result in a subject you are suited to reads better than a weak one in a subject taken for its reputation.
My parents want me to do medicine and I do not.
Have the conversation with evidence rather than resistance. Bring the module list, what the work actually involves day to day, and a specific alternative with its own clear route to secure work. Parents are usually arguing for security, and showing them a secure path you would genuinely complete is more persuasive than declining theirs.
Can I still change after I start?
Often, in the first weeks, and it is far better than enduring two years. Speak to your school immediately, because the window closes quickly once teaching is underway.
Should I take four subjects instead of three?
Only if you can carry all of them well. An additional subject taken thinly is usually worth less than the same hours spent making your core subjects strong, and a weak fourth result sitting alongside three good ones can do more harm than the extra subject does good. Take the fourth when it opens a course you genuinely want and you have the capacity, not to appear more impressive.
What if I am strong in a subject nobody seems to require?
Keep it if you can do so without displacing a required subject. Courses with no named requirements are entered on overall strength, and a subject you excel in raises that. The mistake is dropping a required subject to protect one you enjoy, because the first decides eligibility and the second only decides your total.
Do this before you choose
Open the entry requirements page for one course you are drawn to, right now, and write down the subjects it names. Then do the same for a second course.
