How US Degrees Are Structured: Credit Totals and Term Calendars from Real Colleges
Credit totals and term calendars from named US colleges (semester, quarter, trimester), with worked arithmetic for finish dates, transfers and master's.
Every number on this page was read from a college’s own catalogue, policy or calendar page on 15 October 2026. Where a college did not publish something, the page says so rather than filling the gap with a typical figure.
The short version: a degree is a credit total, and a calendar decides how fast you can collect it. The US pairs of numbers are 60 and 120 on semesters, 90 and 180 on quarters. Everything else on this page is those two ideas applied to real institutions.
What a credit hour is
The US government gives the only definition that applies nationwide. Under federal rule 34 CFR 600.2 (Cornell LII, retrieved 15 October 2026), a credit hour is a unit of student work that reasonably approximates:
- one hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction, plus a minimum of two hours of out-of-class work, each week;
- for about 15 weeks for one semester or trimester hour;
- or 10 to 12 weeks for one quarter hour;
- or an equivalent amount of work over a different period.
The same text lets each institution define the amount of work, subject to its accreditor, and lets it count labs, internships and studio work as “equivalent”. So there is no national rule that a lab hour earns a third of a credit. Check your own catalogue.
The arithmetic follows directly:
| Hours per week | Weeks | Total hours per credit | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semester or trimester credit | 1 class + 2 outside = 3 | about 15 | about 45 |
| Quarter credit | 3 | 10 to 12 | 30 to 36 |
At 10 weeks a quarter credit is 30 of the 45 hours, which is two thirds. That is why one semester credit equals 1.5 quarter credits, and why 180 quarter credits equal 120 semester credits. A 15-credit load is about 15 hours in class and 30 outside, roughly 45 hours a week, in either system.
Credit totals from named catalogues
| College | Calendar | Requirement | Source (retrieved 15 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| University of Alaska Fairbanks | Semester | Associate: at least 60 credits, including transfer credits. Bachelor’s: at least 120 credits, of which 39 must be upper-division | associate, bachelor’s |
| Ohio State University | Semester | Most bachelor’s degrees: 121 credits (120 plus a 1-credit university survey course) | Undergraduate Education |
| De Anza College (CA) | Quarter | Associate: at least 90 quarter units, with 32 to 43 units of general education; catalogue year 2021-22 | catalogue p. 56 |
| University of Washington | Quarter | Bachelor’s: minimum 180 credits; master’s: minimum 36 credits | UW policy SGP 114 |
| Stanford University | Quarter | Bachelor’s: minimum 180 units; master’s: at least 45 units taken at Stanford | bachelor’s, master’s |
| Georgia Tech (online MS in Computer Science) | Semester | 30 credit hours (10 courses); six years to finish | OMSCS orientation document, Spring 2026 |
| University of Edinburgh (MSc Environment and Development) | UK credits | 180 credits: 120 taught plus 60 dissertation; 1 year full-time | programme page |
Three things in this table are worth reading twice.
Ohio State is 121, not 120. The extra credit is a required survey course. The university’s own advising page says 15 hours per semester is the minimum load that finishes in four years, and warns that a 12-hour load will not.
Quarter and semester degrees match. Stanford and UW ask for 180 quarter units. Cal Poly’s unit converter lists 180 quarter units as 120 semester units, and its page carries a banner about preparing for its first semester in fall 2026, so Cal Poly is a campus changing system. Anyone comparing old and new Cal Poly transcripts needs the conversion below.
A stated minimum is a floor. UW also requires that a major has at least 50 credits, and that 45 of the final 60 credits be taken in residence. A degree can need more than the headline number.
I could not verify a current US bachelor’s institution on a true trimester calendar for this page. The trimester example below is a graduate programme, and I do not give a trimester bachelor’s total.
Semester length: calendars compared
“A semester is 15 or 16 weeks” is the sentence every site copies. Here are actual 2026-27 calendars.
| Institution | Term | First day | Last day of classes | Finals | Span |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ohio State | Autumn 2026 | Tue 25 Aug | Wed 9 Dec | 11 to 17 Dec | 15 weeks |
| Ohio State | Spring 2027 | Mon 11 Jan | Mon 26 Apr | 28 Apr to 4 May | 15 weeks |
| UAF | Fall 2026 | Mon 24 Aug | Sat 5 Dec | 7 to 12 Dec | 15 weeks |
| UAF | Spring 2027 | Mon 11 Jan | Mon 26 Apr | 27 Apr to 1 May | 15 weeks |
| Northern Virginia CC (15-week term) | Fall 2026 | Mon 24 Aug | Mon 7 Dec (inferred from exam week starting 8 Dec) | 8 to 14 Dec | 15 weeks |

| University of Washington | Winter 2027 (quarter) | Mon 4 Jan | Fri 12 Mar | 13 to 19 Mar | 10 weeks |
| University of Washington | Spring 2027 (quarter) | Mon 29 Mar | Fri 4 Jun | 5 to 11 Jun | 10 weeks |
| Makerere University (Uganda) | Semester One 2026/27 | Sat 8 Aug | Sat 5 Dec | exams 16 Nov to 5 Dec | 17 weeks, 3 of them exams |

Week counts are my arithmetic from the published dates. Observations:
- The three US semester colleges all run 15 calendar weeks from first class to last class, with finals after. “15 to 16” is accurate only if you count finals week.
- Makerere’s 17 weeks include three exam weeks. That leaves about 14 weeks of teaching (8 Aug to 16 Nov is 100 days), close to the US figure. The headline length differs mainly because exams are counted inside it.
- Makerere also publishes a 10-week “Recess Term” from 15 May to 24 July 2027, so the calendar is two semesters plus a gap, not a third semester.
- UW quarters are 10 weeks of instruction each, so a quarter credit buys fewer total hours than a semester credit. That matches the federal 10-to-12 week quarter hour.
Georgia Tech’s registrar page does not yet publish Fall 2026 or Spring 2027 dates. It lists only tentative Summer 2027 dates (first day 17 May, final exams 2 to 5 August). Not every college publishes two years ahead, and a calendar that is not published should not be filled in from a third-party aggregator.
Withdrawal deadlines
The deadline to withdraw with a W is a better planning date than the last day of class. Two community and state calendars from the same fall:
| Institution | Fall 2026 start | Last day to withdraw with W | Week of term |
|---|---|---|---|
| UAF | Mon 24 Aug | Fri 30 Oct | 10 of 15 |
| Northern Virginia CC | Mon 24 Aug | Fri 30 Oct (without grade penalty) | 10 of 15 |
UAF’s spring 2027 withdrawal date is Fri 26 Mar, week 11 of 15. NOVA’s tuition-refund (census) date is 9 September, in week 3. Between the refund date and the withdrawal date you can leave a course with a W on the transcript and no refund. After the deadline, NOVA requires documented mitigating circumstances and approval from the instructor and academic dean. If you are a visa holder or on financial aid, ask what a W does to your full-time status before using it.
Semesters, quarters and trimesters in a year
| System | Main terms | Seen in this page | Terms per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semester | 2 (autumn, spring) plus optional summer | Ohio State, UAF, NOVA, Makerere | 2, or 3 with summer |
| Quarter | 3 (autumn, winter, spring) plus optional summer | UW, Stanford, De Anza | 3, or 4 with summer |
| Trimester | 3, back to back | UTHSC health informatics programme | 3 |
Summer is not one thing. In 2027 UW offers a full term (21 Jun to 20 Aug) and two half-terms (A: 21 Jun to 21 Jul; B: 22 Jul to 20 Aug). UAF offers a full summer semester (17 May to 6 Aug) and two six-week sessions. Ohio State offers a summer term with 8-week, 6-week and 4-week sessions (10 May to 29 Jul).
For trimesters, the clearest published calendar I found is for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s Health Informatics and Information Management programme:
| Trimester | Classes begin | Last day of trimester |
|---|---|---|
| Fall 2026 | Tue 8 Sep 2026 | Fri 11 Dec 2026 |
| Spring 2027 | Mon 11 Jan 2027 | Fri 16 Apr 2027 |
| Summer 2027 | Mon 10 May 2027 | Fri 13 Aug 2027 |
Each is about 13.5 weeks start to finish. The calendar also says the first 8 per cent of each term is the add/drop window with no W on the transcript. There is no off-term summer here: a student can study all year at an even pace. The page is a calendar for one graduate programme, so it shows the trimester rhythm, not a general rule for trimester schools.
A year of study at each calendar is the same amount of credit. A student at UAF taking 15 credits in fall and spring earns 30 semester credits. A student at UW taking 15 credits in autumn, winter and spring earns 45 quarter credits, which is 30 semester credits by the 2/3 rule. The quarter student sits in class more terms, for fewer weeks each, and finishes on a similar date.
Finish-date arithmetic
Write it as: credits needed divided by credits per term gives terms, and terms divided by terms per year gives years.
Four-year bachelor’s, semester. 120 / 15 = 8 semesters, 4 years. At 12 credits: 120 / 12 = 10 semesters, 5 years. Ohio State’s 121 changes the first case. 8 x 15 = 120 leaves one credit, so one semester must carry 16.
Four-year bachelor’s, quarter. 180 / 15 = 12 quarters = 4 years. Stanford requires undergraduates to take at least 12 units a quarter (full-time status policy), so the minimum load gives 180 / 12 = 15 quarters = 5 years. The ratio is the same as 12 versus 15 on semesters: 80 per cent of the on-time pace.
Associate, semester. 60 / 15 = 4 semesters. At 9 credits: 60 / 9 = 6.7, so 7 semesters (3.5 years).
Associate, quarter. De Anza requires 90 quarter units. At 15 per quarter: 90 / 15 = 6 quarters, two years. De Anza says at least 24 units must be earned there and at most 22 units from another college may count toward the major. Those caps, not just the total, decide whether a transfer student can finish in the time they expect.
Adding summers. Two extra summer courses of 3 credits each year adds 6 credits a year. A student on 30 credits in fall and spring plus 6 in summer earns 36 a year, so 120 / 36 = 3.3 years instead of 4. The savings depend on whether your college charges separately for summer; check before counting on them.
Associate degrees
UAF’s catalogue states that an associate degree needs at least 60 semester credits, transfer credits included, and that all must be at 100-level or above. Its AA also requires 20 credits at 200-level or above and 15 credits earned at UAF. De Anza’s quarter equivalent is 90 units.
Sixty is half of 120, and 90 is half of 180, which is the whole design of a transfer associate degree. Whether the second half is clean depends on what you took: courses built for a transfer degree usually count, while applied courses may not. No source gives a general share, so it is a question for the receiving college. The conversion arithmetic is below. For a real transfer evaluation, ask the receiving college for a written evaluation before you enrol, and ask whether a state or college agreement guarantees the associate degree as a block.
Worked transfer examples (illustrative students)
These students are invented to show the sums. The conversion rule is real: Utah State’s registrar gives 0.667 semester credits per quarter credit and Cal Poly divides by 1.5.
| Case | Credits earned | Converted | Still needed | At 15 per term |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Finished De Anza AA, moving to a 120-credit semester school | 90 quarter units | 90 x 0.667 = 60.03, about 60 semester | 120 – 60 = 60 | 4 semesters |
| Left De Anza at 75 units | 75 quarter units | 75 / 1.5 = 50 semester | 120 – 50 = 70 | 4.7, so 5 semesters |
| Finished UAF AA, moving to UW | 60 semester credits | 60 x 1.5 = 90 quarter | 180 – 90 = 90 | 6 quarters (2 years) |
Receiving schools round differently (Utah State uses 0.667, Cal Poly divides by 1.5), so an evaluation can differ by a credit or two. Whether a specific course counts toward a major is a separate decision from conversion.
Master’s degrees
Master’s length depends on the credit total, the pace, and the country. The credit totals from named programmes:
| Programme | Credits | Pace implied |
|---|---|---|
| University of Washington (general Graduate School minimum) | 36 quarter credits | 3 quarters at 12 credits |
| Stanford (minimum taken at Stanford) | 45 units | 3 quarters at 15 units |
| Georgia Tech OMSCS | 30 semester hours, 10 courses | 5 terms at 2 courses; 10 terms at 1 course |
| Edinburgh MSc Environment and Development | 180 UK credits | 1 year full-time |
Georgia Tech’s document adds a limit: students must complete the degree within six years. At one course per fall, spring and summer (3 terms a year), 10 courses take 3.3 years. At one course per fall and spring only, they take 5 years, inside the limit with one year spare. This is the arithmetic behind “part-time takes longer”: a slow pace is fine until it meets the time limit. Ask any programme for its time limit before you start.
UW’s 36 credits are a minimum for the University, and programmes can ask for more. Stanford’s 45 is a minimum for units taken at Stanford, not the total for every master’s. Both numbers are floors set by the university, so check the programme page.
Edinburgh shows the shape of a UK-style master’s: 120 taught credits plus a 60-credit dissertation, one year full-time. A US master’s of 36 to 45 credits at a part-time pace of 6 to 9 per term runs several years, which is how two-year US degrees arise. UK and US credit scales differ and must not be converted by eye. The European Commission describes 60 ECTS credits as a full year of study, but UK and US credits are set by each institution.
A thesis or dissertation is the unpredictable part. Coursework finishes on the calendar; research finishes when the committee agrees. Edinburgh’s MSc puts it last: 120 taught credits, then a 60-credit dissertation. If you want a doctorate, the master’s question is separate: see do you need a master’s for a PhD.
I do not give subject-by-subject master’s lengths (MBA, MSW and so on) here, because I could not verify them against named programmes. If a specific programme matters to you, its graduate bulletin states credit total, residency and time limit.
Using the numbers
- Find your college’s credit total and calendar type in its catalogue, not in a general article.
- Divide by the load you can really carry, and use 15 as the on-time test on semesters and quarters.
- Look up the withdrawal and refund dates for your first term on the registrar’s calendar.
- If you are transferring, convert with the receiving school’s rule and request the evaluation in writing.
