Scholarships open to Cameroonians in October 2026: what is real, closed or blocked
A dated status check of Fulbright, Chevening, Commonwealth, MINESUP-listed awards and Erasmus Mundus for Cameroonian applicants, with deadlines and a plan.
“Apply for a scholarship” is useless advice if you do not know which ones accept you this month. This post is a status check for a Cameroonian applicant on 15 October 2026. Some well-known awards are closed to you for the current cycle. One famous “Cameroon Fulbright” page is for Americans. The rest of the work is to know where Cameroonian notices appear and to plan backwards from the next real deadline.
Scams, what “fully funded” means, references and the motivation letter each have their own post: scholarship scam warning signs, what fully funded actually covers, how to ask for a reference, motivation letter that gets read. This one is about calendar, bodies and procedure.
Status table, 15 October 2026
| Award | Status for a Cameroonian | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Fulbright Foreign Student Program (FFSP), 2027-28 | Closed. Deadline was 20 April 2026 | US Embassy Yaoundé announcement, as reported below |
| Chevening 2027/28 | Closed in Cameroon | Chevening’s Cameroon page, as reported below |
| Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships 2027/28 | Cameroon not on the eligible-country list. CSC closing date 20 October 2026 | CSC Master’s page |
| Chinese Government Scholarships | 13 places were listed for 2025/26. Check MINESUP for 2027 | MINESUP bourses list |
| Algerian government scholarships | MINESUP posted 205 places for 2026/2027 on 13 August 2026 | same list |
| Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters | Open to master’s applicants from any country; most deadlines October to January | Erasmus+ page |
Why UK routes are blocked this year
Under a UK “visa brake” that took effect on 26 March 2026, entry-clearance applications for the Student route made outside the UK by nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan are refused, including from people who already hold a CAS (the UK university’s confirmation of acceptance). The page calls the measure “not permanent” and gives no end date (GOV.UK visa brake). Existing valid visas are not cancelled. The Home Office impact assessment says the brake applies for an initial 18-month period (from 26 March 2026, so to about September 2027), after which it is reviewed and may be extended or released. The 18 months is the assessment’s figure, not a legal expiry date.
Chevening’s Cameroon page says the programme is closed (as quoted in search results; I could not open the page myself, it returned a “page not found” error on 15 October). Confirm it at chevening.org/scholarship/cameroon/ before relying on it. Take this at face value: do not spend a year of essays on a UK award unless the brake has ended.
Fulbright: the page that is not for you
Searching “Fulbright Cameroon” brings up the Cameroon “Open Study/Research Award (2027-2028)” on the Fulbright US Student site. That is for US students going to Cameroon: it lists US citizens, a stipend of about 3,000 USD per month, a September 2027 start, and states that dual citizens of Cameroon are not eligible (Fulbright Cameroon page). If you are Cameroonian and the page says “US citizen”, you are on the wrong page.
Your programme is the Fulbright Foreign Student Program, run through the US Embassy in Yaoundé. What I could establish:
- The 2027-2028 call recruited and nominated young Cameroonian professionals for graduate study in the US, with online applications due 11:59 pm Cameroon time on Monday 20 April 2026 at apply.iie.org/ffsp2027 (US Embassy announcement).
- Prior cycle for comparison: deadline 21 April 2025 (Opportunity Desk listing of the 2026-27 call, a third-party site). Two years, two deadlines about 20 April. That is a pattern, not a promise.
- Eligibility in that listing: Cameroonian citizen or permanent resident with a valid Cameroonian passport; four years of university study equivalent to a US bachelor’s degree (three-year degrees may qualify but each US university decides); English adequate for graduate study; priority to master’s over PhD.
- Documents in that listing: personal statement, study objectives essay, CV, transcripts, diplomas, three letters of recommendation, and a writing sample (recommended).
- The Embassy page says about 3 to 5 Cameroonians receive fully funded awards each year.
- MINESUP also republished a Fulbright notice for 2026-2027 on 10 April 2025, which shows the ministry is a second place to watch (MINESUP list).
Next call is probably announced in the first months of 2027. Plan as if it closes around 20 April 2027, and treat any earlier official date as the real one.
Reading MINESUP, the ministry that actually posts these
The Ministry of Higher Education’s “Bourses” category lists government-to-government awards offered to Cameroonians. As of 15 October 2026, among the entries it showed, newest first:
| Posted | Provider | What the notice says |
|---|---|---|
| 13 Aug 2026 | Algeria | 205 places, 2026/2027 (scanned PDF) |
| 5 Jun 2026 | IAESTE, India | 150 partial scholarships, 2026/2027 |
| 10 Apr 2025 | United States | Fulbright Foreign Student and African Research Scholar, 2026-2027 |
| 29 Nov 2024 | China | 13 Chinese Government Scholarships for 2025/2026, Bachelor, Master, Doctoral |
| 3 Oct 2024 | UK Commonwealth Scholarships Commission | postgraduate awards for September 2025, six themes |
| 26 Jun 2024 | Tunisia | 31 places for 2024/2025 |
| 4 Sep 2023 | Switzerland | postgraduate and postdoctoral; deadline 30 Nov 2023, to the Swiss Embassy in Yaoundé |
Three lessons from the list. First, many notices carry no deadline in the web summary, because the details sit inside scanned PDFs or images; open the PDF itself. I could not read the Chinese, Algerian and Commonwealth PDFs because they are scanned images, so I report only what the listing page says. Second, the route differs by country: Switzerland sent applications to its embassy in Yaoundé; the US uses an online portal. Third, a notice appears roughly a year ahead of the study year, so a 2027 notice for China, if it follows the 29 November 2024 pattern, would appear around late 2026. That is an inference, not a published schedule.
For the UK Commonwealth award, the CSC’s national nominating agency page lists Cameroon’s agency as MINESUP’s Department of Assistance and University Welfare (CSC nominating agencies). The CSC does not take direct applications for Master’s scholarships and requires a nominator. Cameroon is not on the Master’s eligible list I read, so this route is currently closed for you on both counts.
MINESUP contact published on its bourses page: sdacl@minesup.gov.cm, telephone 222 22 19 07, BP 1739 Yaoundé.
Erasmus Mundus: open now, application goes straight to the consortium
Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s programmes accept applicants from any country with a bachelor’s degree (or in the final year); you apply directly to the programme you choose, most deadlines fall between October and January, and some programmes offer full scholarships to top-ranked applicants worldwide, covering participation costs plus travel, visa and living allowance (Erasmus+). Each programme sets its own entry requirements. This is the one large scholarship family where an October 2026 reader can still act this season. Read each programme’s own page for its date; do not trust a list that does not say which programme.
A backward plan for an April 2027 deadline (illustrative)
Assume the FFSP deadline is Tuesday 20 April 2027 (a guess from two years of data). Counting back:
- 20 April: submit 3 to 5 days early, so 15 April.
- 9 February (10 weeks before 20 April): essays final.
- 5 January (15 weeks before): referees asked, with CV and draft statements. See how to ask for a reference.
- By 30 November 2026: transcripts and diploma copies in hand; passport valid.
If the actual date is announced earlier, shift every line by the difference. Your own travel and holiday weeks (December especially) are not in these numbers.
Checklist before you start any application
- Does the official page say Cameroonian nationals are eligible this year?
- Where does the application go: portal, embassy, ministry office, or university?
- What is the closing time, with time zone?
- Is the source the provider or a repost? If it asks for a fee, stop and read the scam signs.
- Is the award for study abroad, or for foreigners coming to Cameroon, like the Fulbright page above?
